The neighbourhood, as one of the most appropriate sites for understanding broader social processes both nationally and cross-nationally, is able to provide a vehicle for integrated and comparative research. Through three related themes; the importance of neighbourhood in everyday life; governance, participation and citizenship; urban renaissance and regeneration implications of contemporary social change across European societies can be analysed and understood and the similarities and differences in processes and outcomes exposed and explained. Position papers on these themes presented at the workshop will be posted on the web as will the final report on the outcomes from the workshop.
The workshop will not only facilitate an interchange of ideas between European experts in the field but will also integrate and develop the expertise of newly established researchers. It brings together an interdisciplinary team of researchers including social policy analysts, human geographers, sociologists, historians and economists. More broadly, the outcome from the workshop will make an important contribution to the field of European comparative, cross-national research through the enhancement of comparative and equivalent concepts and the development of a cross-national comparative analytical framework. It will also provide the opportunity for developing further European comparative, cross-national analysis and sustaining the international network through the submission of a proposal for an ESF Collaborative Research Project grant.
