Paul Burton - BA (Hons) Town Planning, PhD
Paul Burton is Senior Lecturer and Head of the School for Policy Studies at the University of Bristol, where he has worked since 1980. He trained and worked as a town planner in London before moving to Bristol to carry out research for his PhD on the redevelopment of London’s docklands. Paul has maintained his interest in urban policy and regeneration through a variety of research projects, for example on living conditions in European Cities and on youth homelessness, and policy evaluations, for example on the Urban Programme and local community development programmes in Exeter.

His research interests have broadened in recent years to include the processes of public participation in policy making and he has recently had published various papers on the practical, theoretical and methodological issues in judging the effectiveness of participation.

In 2001 he chaired the Bristol Democracy Commission, which reviewed the state of local democracy in the city and recommended various ways in which it might be strengthened and he continues to contribute to local and national debates about the scope for extending local democracy. His is also contributing to the University’s work on community engagement and helping to develop a comparative research programme. Paul is currently developing his interest in ‘spaces for democracy’ by looking at the interior and exterior spaces in which democratic activities take place.
